DigitalMethods: The Cycling Factory

  • With recent upward trends of bicycling in cities, the need for folding bicycles is becoming more apparent. This project was to design a factory for the production of folding bicycles for the city of Philadelphia and surrounding areas.
The two moving systems of the factory are inspired by the cyclical nature of the folding bicycle, as well as the cycle of the assembly process.
The western edge of the building houses a moving parts wall, which delivers bicycle parts to the appropriate stages of the assembly process.
The eastern edge of the building showcases an operable facade that utilizes folding and sliding louvered panels, which block sunlight and control privacy.
The site is located just northeast of Center City Philadelphia, adjacent to 11th and Callowhill, with the Reading Viaduct as the western boundary.
