Northern Liberties Library

  • A LIBRARY IS ITS MEDIA The library's role within a city is shifting from an independent study zone towards a community building. The Northern Liberties Library aims to do both, by providing space both for the independent studier as well as the community as a whole. A wall that would separate the two would also bring them together, by containing the shelving for the media and the administration core. On the south side, the environment is louder and busier, appropriate for the community settings. Meanwhile on the North side is quiet Green Street, which is appropriate for the independent research side.

  • A JUXTAPOSITION OF HEAVY AND LIGHT MATERIALS This centralized wall is envisioned as load bearing concrete, also absorbing sound from side to side. The wall wraps around the site to create administration space, growing shorter to create the circulation desk upon the entrance.

  • INFILLING THE WALL WITH THE LIBRARY'S MEDIA To successfully showcase the library's media, the concrete is formed in order to provide ample amount of shelving. On the other side of the wall are the light seating arrangements, covered with glass and a complex facade system that allows a variety of light, sight, and shadow according to its task.
