• Aetna Felt sponsored waste stream felt and cardboard in a collaborative project to design home furnishings that would degrade naturally in landfills.

  • Bales of industrial waste felt and cardboard supplied by Aetna.

  • Sketch iterations of modular cardboard shelving units.
  • A four-way shelving system with minimal hardware became the final concept to progress further.
  • The shelves hang on the wall via a steel mount and crossing pegs, which insert into the individual shelves. The shelves are made from layered corrugated cardboard pressed together.
  • Testing of the shelves required that the weight could be supported with the single mount on a wall. The shelves had to support at least four large diner plates at the furthest point.
  • The final shelving unit using the single mount and countering its own weight. Features include felt hanging basket rack for plates, holes for glasses to stay secure, and a valley to stack bottles.
