The Schuylkill river trail is one of the greatest attractions in Philadelphia and provides access to the city. Paine’s park, a local skate park is located along the trail near the Art Museum and is a short fifteen minute walk to Market street and City Hall. The River Viaduct Cycle Center is adjacent to Paine’s Park and situated below grade near a tunnel entrance. The tunnel used to serve as a train route which has been converted into a bike and walking trail with access to other parts of the city. The center is accessible from Paine’s Park and also from the river trail and is a process of discovery. From grade on the pains park side one sees a glass and steel box that is lightly sitting on the site and appears to be somewhat of a bridge. As one approaches they can see that the building extends down into the void space and appears to hover above the ground. The primary purpose of the building is bike storage and rental. A small cafe and lounge space also caters to Paine’s Park. The building is axially located in reference to the art museum steps and patterning of the park. The cycle center is a meeting place for bikers and tourists to utilize and enhance the city.
