The Bait and Tackle Restaurant known popular amongst the tourists of Santa Monica lies at the tip of the lithosphere, with a 2700 view of the Pacific. The nautical environment is embedded with activities, fishing being the popular one, which is served as the catch of the day on the special menu items. The contemporary restaurant brings in the notion of a boat rocking by the ocean, suggesting the dynamic forces that constantly transform the landscape. Furthermore, the environment after sunset transitions into a warm enclosure that listens to the natural waves of the ocean accompanied by the music played by the Jazz guitarists. To illustrate the spirit of the earth that refuses to sit still, Kinetic Landscape was developed to rest on the restaurant’s table, lighting up the intimate environment and mimicking its motion.
The fixture comprises of two solid layers, representing the threshold that lies between the two realms of the Earth with downlights that reflect on the solid lower portion to provide patterns on actuation. The source of light, being located in the pulley system is transmitted through optical fiber cables to a weighted block element that enhances its dynamism while transferring loads linearly. Diffused light is noticed in the upper block as the translucent fabric blocks the unwanted hot-spots from getting in the eyes of the users.
“The knowledge of the past times and of the places of the earth is both an ornament and nutriment to the human mind.”
