For Design II, we were to design the 4th and 5th story (including the roof) of a loft for a family of a specific culture. This family includes a single father, his daughter, and the father's mother. The culture I chose was Mexico. To find my concept, I did research on many different aspects of Mexican culture such as their architecture, food, and celebrations. I eventually found inspiration from their landscape and all the different layers they have. This single country has volcanoes, beaches, deserts, mountains, and grasslands. I also found inspiration in Aztec temples and how they gradually get smaller towards the top. I decided to base my concept around the word 'stratum' which means "a layer of material, naturally or artificially formed, often one of a number of parallel layers one upon another" (dictionary.com). My 4th floor space therefore consists of 3 layers. There is a storage space against the one wall seen in section where you cant walk through it. The next layer of the space is the "livable" area where the kitchen island is located, the dining room table, and the sofa. The last layer is the circulation layer which is an open area used strictly from getting from one space to the other.
