Interwoven Community is an education and training center for people who are preparing to spend time doing volunteer work in the Amazon Rainforest. The facility is located in Miami, Florida, and additionally serves as center for the local community to learn about the rainforest and importance of sustainable living. The goal was to create a flexible, interactive learning environment that would inspire and prepare volunteers for their life and work in the rainforest. We drew inspiration from our research on the vast and intricate system of interconnected roots and mycorrhiza fungus that links the trees of the rainforest into living network of communication. Using the virtual connectivity of various kinds of technology, as well as sensory and hands-on experience with rainforest life, we created a unique learning space of many different functions, connected by its adaptability and universal purpose.
