The final project in my design III studio tasked us with designing a 25,000+ sq. ft. international cultural center in the Callowhill District of Philadelphia. This building is intended as the first stop for refugees coming from the Middle East and includes program elements such as apartments, a prayer space, and classrooms.
My concept for this design was the idea of transition. Refugees are in one of the biggest transitions of their lives so I studied the transition space between volumetric programs through enclosures, thresholds, changes in ceiling heights and grade, and different glazing systems.
