As part of a research project, the transect study focuses on safety and circulation along a specific transect located in Center City Philadelphia. Many factors contribute to the feeling of security. The factors depend on the time of the day. The study involves assigning a numerical value to many factors that influence individual’s feeling of safety. Some of those factors include construction sites, sunlight, artificial light, people, the speed of people, traffic, sound, and line of sight. The study allows for an understanding of where individuals would feel most secure. The following diagrams are a product of this study that were developed using Rhino, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Each specific notation corresponds to a different variable that was measured throughout multiple site visits and then is mapped out using digital tools and notations to create a diagrammatic plan of where individuals feel more safe and how that affects the way individuals circulate around the transect.
